Super League Round 3 Queensland Pirates v Melbourne Vipers – MEN – Game 2 Sunday 3/11/19 Game 6 of the Pirate’s Men’s AVL campaign saw the team taking on the Melbourne Vipers in the second match of the weekend. After going down to The Pirates in game 1 the Vipers were determined to turn things around. However, it was the Pirates who came out firing, with Kieran Ivers serving 3 aces in a row as part of a 6 point scoring run. The teams then traded points until another Pirates scoring run on the back of Shane Alexander serving and outstanding team defence saw the Pirates take the set, winning 25/15. Taking the momentum into the second set the Pirates stayed committed to team structures and applying pressure in both attack and defence which showed on the scoreboard. The Vipers hung in the set and show some good fight to try and turn the match however were unable to turn the tide, going down 25/19. With renewed enthusiasm the Vipers team came out in the third set with a “nothing to lose” attitude, with the teams trading point-for-point for the majority of the set. Solid side out play enabled the Pirates to defend the first of two set points. Then, with ball in hand and a set point still to defend, the Pirates continued with their aggressive serving, and an ace from Shane Alexander levelled the scores at 24:24. To the delight of the home supporters, Alexander then served 2 consecutive aces for the Pirates to take the set 26:24 and the match 3:0.
