Match Reports 2019 Men’s AVL Super League Match 2 Qld Pirates v UTSSU Following on from the previous night’s smooth 3-0 victory, the Queensland Pirates were in no mood to take it easy on the visiting UTSSU team in the reverse fixture. Right from the warm up it was clear the Pirates were focussed and ready to play, and exploded out of the blocks in the first set, racing to a 7-0 lead on the back of some tough serving from Andrew Maclean. Transition opportunities were converted well with the team scoring a number of points. The Pirates controlling the first set taking it 25:19. Carrying the momentum into the second set, the Pirates again applied the team’s service plan and defensive structures, which saw a number of points created and allowed the team to build a comfortable led and take the set 25:15. Taking control of the match in the 3rd set, the Pirates made some positional and tactical changes that increased the tempo and speed of the game which UTSSU could not compete with, the Pirates taking the set 25:16 and the match 3 sets to nil. Pirates Captain Andrew Maclean topped the stats for points won with 13 (8 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks), closely followed by top point earner from the previous day Shane Alexander (12 points: 8 kills, 1 aces, 3 blocks). In evidence of the Pirates focus on defence, the team racked up an amazing 34 digs. Overall, a great result for the team and a successful 1st round of the AVL season for the Pirates. ARRRGH!!!!!!! Finals score, Qld Pirates defeated UTSSU 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-16). Match time: 1hr 8min
