Queensland Pirates v Canberra Heat Round 5 – Game 1 – Men The 5th round of the Pirates Mens AVL seasons saw the highly anticipated top of the table clash against a Canberra Heat side looking to continue their winning start to the AVL season. The Pirates, at home at the premier venue of the AVL, Nissan Arean (Qld State Netball Centre), came out strongly in the first set, setting the tone of the match early. Consistent side out play and excellent application of team defensive structures allowed the Pirates to assert their dominance, to the delight of the home crowd taking the first 25:20. The second set saw disciplined application of the Pirates serving plans, which in turn allowed the team to take an early lead in the set. This early scoreboard pressure coupled with strong defensive play placed significant pressure on the Heat side to step up their play. However they were unable come back from the early deficit, with the Pirates taking the set 25:18 and the momentum into the next set. In the early stages of the third set, the Canberra Heat side found some rhythm on side out play going point for point with the Pirates until the middle of the set. From this point the Pirates team’s consistency and outstanding team defence saw the team score in runs of points, applying scoreboard pressure to the Heat side who were unable respond the Pirates winning the set 25:19 and the match 3:0.
