WA Hornets were looking for a strong performance to build some winning home form in the southern conference, taking on the VVA Vultures for the first time in 2017. VVA played well in the opening set, not allowing the Hornets to establish a rhythm and forcing a number of errors. The Vultures' desperation and workrate out of system was on show, and they took the opening set. Middle blockers Jonathan Morley and Jake King were highly effective for VVA throughout the match, but improved serving and a standout performance from Ryan Smith in partnership with setter Kable Monck contributed to see the Hornets eventually take the match in four intense and entertaining sets.
