The Queensland Pirates will start as the favourites to win the gold medal in both the men’s and the women’s competition in the Australian Volleyball Super League heading into this weekend’s finals on the Gold Coast.

The Pirates men’s team went through the regular season undefeated, winning ten from ten while the Queensland women’s side lost only two games on its way to securing the minor premiership.

Saturday sees the semi finals with the Pirates playing the UTSSU Shield in one men’s semi final, and the Canberra Heat facing the Melbourne Vipers in the other.

If results so far this season are a guide, it is shaping up to be a Queensland Pirates versus Canberra Heat Grand Final in the men’s.

Queensland accounted for the UTSSU Shield 3-0, 3-0 in round one, while Canberra defeated Melbourne 3-2, 3-0 in round two.

In the women’s semi finals, the Queensland Pirates play the Canberra Heat and Melbourne takes on Adelaide.

If results through the regular season are a guide it will be a Queensland versus Melbourne Grand Final in the women’s.

In round five, the Pirates defeated Canberra 3-1, 3-2 while Adelaide accounted for Melbourne 3-0 in the opening game in round one before Melbourne beat Adelaide 3-1 in the second game.

The semi finals are on Saturday with the bronze and gold medal games on Sunday.
