The Uni Blues have made the best possible start in their quest for a fourth consecutive women’s Australian Volleyball League title, posting two 3-0 wins over cross-town rivals, the VVA Vultures, on the weekend.

There were also impressive wins for the Canberra Heat, and the WA Pearls in their first outing of the season.

The Pearls travelled to Adelaide and scored consecutive 3-0 wins over the Adelaide Storm.

After two agonising 2-3 losses to the QLD Pirates on the opening weekend, the Canberra Heat joined the winners’ circle with two 3-1 wins over UTSSU, leaving the Sydney team without a win after two weekends of competition.

The Pirates and the Sydney Amazons both had byes on the weekend.

The Canberra Heat, having split the points with the Queensland Pirates on the opening weekend of the men’s competition, split the points with UTSSU Shield last weekend.

UTSSU, who won both their matches against Sydney Warriors the previous weekend won a tight tussle 3-2 on Saturday, but the Heat bounced back to post a 3-1 win on Sunday.

The Pirates also posted a double win over another of the new teams, the Canberra Centre of excellence, 3-0, 3-1.

In the Victorian derby the points were split between Uni Blues and the VVA Vultures, wth the Blues taking the first match 3-1, but then the Vultures bouncing back to post a comprehensive 3-0 win on Sunday.

The Adelaide Storm and WA Hornets both made their first appearance for the season, with the Storm winning both matches in tight tussles, 3-2, 3-1.


The Storm will host the VVA Vultures this weekend, while the Hornets and the Pearls will travel to Albany on the WA south coast to host the Uni Blues.

The two Canberra men’s teams, the Heat and the Centre of Excellence, will face off at the AIS, while the Pirates and UTSSU Shield men’s and women’s teams meet twice at Clayfield College.
