Queensland Pirates v Canberra Heat Round 5 – Game 2 – Women As expected it was another great battle between the top 2 ranked teams in the women. As with the previous evening’s match, the first set was a tight affair, with teams trading points through to the closing stages of the match. Canberra Heat’s were able to earn severa points on serve to close the set 25:21.. The second set started the same way as the first and the Heat pushed away to an early lead. The Pirates brought in young setter Anuprita Ghalsasi who steadied the ship and the Pirates managed to sneak home 25:23. In contrast to the previous two set, the 3rd was largely controlled by the Heat, on the back some strong side out from Jenny Tait and consistent service pressure, finishing ahead 25:17 . The Pirates rallied and fought back with some strong hitting through Rebecca Redgen and inspired defence by Tiaan Smith to take the 4th set (25:15) and go to the tie break set. The fifth set started as had the first two, with teams trading point-for-point to the change of ends. However it was that the Pirates started point together a string of quick points on the back of clever serving from Captian Jess Ryder, jumping out to a 13:8 lead. A lat rally from the Heat made for some nervous moments for the Pirates supporters, who attended again in good numbers, before the Pirates finally closed out the match 15:12 and in doing so earning themselves the Minor Premiership.
